Now I will define some of the terms which you may not have been familiar with.

Pollution Prevention
This is a new 'science' that is becoming more and more important in state and local government. Included within it's scope are: stormwater, hazardous materials, industrial waste, and others. Newly discovered methods for dealing with these problems are announced at conferences, through pamphlets, by local government and by the Department of Toxic Substance Control's (DTSC) Pollution Prevention Network.
Saltwater Intrusion
As we use more water than can be replenished naturally into the water table, water from the ocean is sucked in beneath us. This is happening in Monterey County and Santa Cruz County.
Green roof
A roof that is made of layered impermeables -> permeables -> gravels and soils. Designed to hold plants and prevent environmental degradations (such as stormwater pollution and heat in cities) and increas the amount of water which percolates back into the soil.
Ethnobotany
The study of the way that humans use plants: medicine, food, items, etc.
