Mad Science Camp 2011?

Whew! Just shook the dust and pine needles out of my hair, but several sticky ideas are still lodged in my noggin. AMF 14 was, in my opinion, very fruitful and DEFINITELY an improvement on last year. There was an amazing amount of cooperation, collaboration, and cross-genre pollination. Thanks to everyone who helped make it happen. One thing that became very clear to me is that there are a lot of very smart weirdos in our community(ies), and we have much to learn from each other. AMF was definitely an example of applied imagination with a generous sprinkling of technical know-how. In the interest of encouraging this sort of idea exchange and radical inter-education, I would like to propose a project which could be a platform for both practical and theoretical skillshare: MAD SCIENCE CAMP. On the educational/performative side, I envision lots of skillshares and lectures, perhaps some Powerpoint and slide shows; collaborative experiments, workshops and perhaps a reading room/lending library. On the more practical/application side, we could have stations for, among other things, electronics/speaker repair, solar/bicycle power generation, water/chemical testing (a la Dancesafe), and communications (the nascent inter-camp CB project shows a lot of promise and should be nurtured). As an anthropologist, I'm much more oriented toward the social sciences. But I know many of you have solid backgrounds in a variety of hard sciences, from biology and electronics to chemistry and botany. I'm thinking that this could be a multi-camp collaboration, perhaps a guild of some sort where folks could trade off time there. Obviously the pool of insane geniuses is not limited to any one sound system or clique. I'm still reflecting upon my experiences, and many of you are as well. I'd be interested in hearing what sorts of ideas this sparks with you. What would MAD SCIENCE CAMP look like? Who would be interested in working on this for next year? How can we encourage radical collaboration? What are some potential problems with this idea?

I wish it would have been in Cascadia
Not to be an ungrateful dick, but how in the hell can this years site be classified as either "Cascadia" or "Pacific NW"? Lame. It would have been cool to know a little sooner that the site was going to be somewhere outside the "advertised" (and traditional) area.

It was in Cascadia.
... your wish happened:

Cascadia / Pacific NW bioregion includes the northern portions of CA.
Sorry you weren't able to make it based on this misunderstanding. As for 'traditional' and 'advertised', this years location, (which was frickin' AWESOME(!) BTW, [big up's - thanks-a-million to the scouts!!!]), did satisfy those criteria.
People were getting pissed on this issue the first time A.M.F. was more than 50 miles from Eugene, it's kind of a tired point by now. If a half dozen constantly mechanically "interesting" grease conversion buses full of mechanical wizard clownz can commit to spending an arbitrarily long amount of time on the side of the road doing whatever it takes to make the fest happen, why should it be so difficult for people to deal with wherever it happens to be?
[sorry for replying to an off topic post, don't want to derail the GP post , is there anyway to move comments to their own threads if they don't relate to the parent post?]
Professors Plague's proposed mad science camp sounds rad! let's make it happen. Heard lots of ideas that would fit under that umbrella.

Mad Science!!!!!
Wow! it's really going to happen! Well I have done things similar to this before, like in 2005 when we all made LED headlamps ourselves. Since that AMF was on the New Moon, it was pretty cool to try to recognize people based on the pattern of colors of LEDs they chose.
Next year we will certainly have radio communications, and if the past is any indicator there will still be plenty of soldering to do by the time we arrive. I am looking for people who want to work on this starting now.
As a practical matter, i think we should consider making this camp somewhere near SPAZ camp, and part of it, but far enough away that normal voices can be used to communicate directly between people in person.
Also, i believe that scheduling of "workshops" at this spot will have to be figured out dynamically. And signs telling of upcoming "events" should be posted at several major camps, so that people who don't hear it from a friend might still find out about something that could change their life forever.

mad science camp
yes yes yes!!! this is an excellent and absoulutely dreamy idea!!

perhaps it's a local problem...try clearing your cache or restarting...

yeah something is wrong, i tried multiple browsers
there is something wrong with the website. It tends to delete the entire contents of your post and replace it with "j" right when you click "Post comment". This is very frustrating. You are all going to have to guess what I wrote before the site deleted it.
I recommend doing a Select All and then Copy before hitting Post, so that if it does delete what you typed, you can paste it again instead of losing your inspiration.
also, consider clicking "disable rich-text" below the comments box before typing. Perhaps that should be set as the default.

i had the same problem but
i had the same problem when i used Safari but when i used Firefox everything worked...

extremely white washed and homogenized
has anyone asked themselves why these groups look so pasty... i remember 25 years ago, when so called sub-kulture embraced all ages - sexes - colors... now all i see is one white man or white woman spewing one white truth... wow - if that is what you call phreaky... then it is only too obvious that phreak kulture is not what it was 30 plus years ago...

extremely white choir sings apollo theater
wow, how clueless 'gypsyjulian'-
that photo was taken just outside the Apollo Theater in HARLEM. When was the last time you saw a gathering like that Uptown in NYC? That would have been just as astounding 25 years ago when YOU were down... and by the way you write about the culture that has been built on the foundation YOU supposedly were setting... you did a really good job.
...lastly, might the 'profile picture' drawing of a clown really be what you look like in the flesh, or are you homogenized yourself ?
