javanese selamatan for the dark spirits of sugarcane
Yogyakarta 2005. This was a day long event happens--every year I believe--at a significant period in the life cycle of the sugar cane crops that dominate this section of Yogya. Many huge pyramid-shaped rice tower offerings are made, along with two huge, black demon puppets signifying the male and female aspects. These items are carried in a procession led by members of the Keraton or palace guard in full colonial regalia on horseback, along with local dignitaries of the palace, and I imagine probably also from the sugar company. There is also drumming. This is a must see happening if in Yogya at that time, as the procession is quite long and totally takes over the entire route it travels--maybe about 1km or more down the main road (jl Godean I believe, as I am writing this in postscript 3 years later >:0] and onto the south ring road before being burned....mmmh the smell of burning sugar...
